I’ve been seeing this girl recently, and she has a dog, and it has been a little tense. My dog has a very dominant personality. She always wants to make sure other dogs know she is the top dog.
Abby’s dog is a similar personality, but being possibly a Carolina Dog, she has the size and weight advantage. Additionally, since it’s easier for me to take Xabe over to her condo than it is for her to take Zoe to my tiny apartment, Zoe has the home field advantage.
It’s interesting seeing dogs’ struggle for dominance.
We took them on a walk to get them used to each others’ presence, and when we got back, Xabe trotted up to the water bowl to drink as she is accustomed to doing, but Zoe started standing over her, which is a dominant move. Xabe got nervous and backed away from the bowl, and Zoe started drinking. I have never seen my dog back down from this kind of power play before.
I can’t help but feel bad for her, though, cuz last night she wouldn’t even come up the stairs, cuz she knew that Zoe was up there and protective of the territory. This is pretty normal as far as dogs go, but it’s something we’ll have to overcome if we want a merry household. Xabe may just have to come to grips that she’s second-in-command for the first time in her life.
